How much does it cost to paint a wall in india?

  • Interior repainting - Upto 1500 Sq.ft cost less than Rs. 5K for wall & ceiling paint.
  • Cost less than Rs. 7K for complete interior painting that includes wall, ceiling, doors, windows, and balcony grill. Below is the cost sheet for complete interior painting.
  • Interior fresh painting - Upto 1500 Sq.ft - Cost less than 20K. Below is the cost sheet

The above costs include branded material and labor. If your property size is less than 1500 Sq.ft, obviously your cost drops down because material consumption and labor work drop as well.

Painting cost depends on 3 factors,

  1. Raw material
  2. Material consumption (Size of the property)
  3. Labor.

Let's see the cost factor in the description.

  1. Raw Materials:

Materials are available at different segments in markets. They are,

  • High segment.
  • Midsegment
  • low segment.

One such example of segmentation from Asian paints brand is,

  • Royal emulsion - Elite segment - Priced Rs. 9,724/- per 20 litre
  • Premium emulsion - High segment - Priced Rs. 5,652/- per 20 litre
  • Tractor emulsion - Midsegment - Price Rs.2,400/- per 20 litre - This paint is also known as tenancy paint because of its standard quality at affordable price.
  • Distemper - Low segment - Priced Rs. 950/- per 20 kg

Package across all emulsion segment are 900ml, 4 liters, 10 liters, and 20 liters. Distemper comes in 2Kg, 5Kg, 10kg, and 20kg. Below are the sample image of emulsion and distemper paint.

  • White Putty: For repainting, just 1 kg of putty is sufficient for up to 1500 Sq.ft flat. Usually used at holes of TV wall mount, AC wall mount hole, needle holes (wall frame hole, water filter hole, etc..). 1Kg putty cost Rs. 45/- in market. Below is the sample image of putty
  • For fresh painting, It's very important to do perfect plastering to bring putty consumption. Too much rough surface and major undulation in plastering consume more putty. Need to apply at least 2 coat of putty in new construction. On average the consumption, 12–15 Sq.ft per kg for 2 coat. To determine your exact quantity, buy 5kg putty from local shop, and test the coverage. Please be noted, in the above costing sheet, I haven’t added putty cost in fresh painting because putty work is part of construction activity.
  • For 1500 Sq.ft flat, require putty is around 120–150 Kg, Putty cost Rs. 900 per 20Kg bag. Putty comes at the quantity of 1kg, 5kg, 10kg, and 20Kg.
  • Sandpaper: For repainting, just 2 sandpaper is sufficient. The sandpaper cost Rs. 10/- per sheet.
  • For fresh painting, require at least 20 sheets of sandpaper. Below is the images of sandpaper.
  • Enamel Paint: Enamel paints are two types, water-based (eco-friendly) and oil-based (chemical-based). Oil-based paint is most prominent and commonly used because of high durability and less in price. Enamel paint are used on metal and wood surface, such as doors, windows, and grills. Enamel paints are packed in metal tins and package comes at the quantity 50ml, 100ml, 200ml, 500ml, 1 liter, 4 liters, 10 litre, and 20 litre. A litre of enamel cost around Rs. 220/- + Rs. 20 ~ color mixing
  • For repainting, coverage of up to 5 doors of front & back, 5 window grill, and a balcony grill consume within 4 liters of paint. 4 litre of enamel cost around Rs. 1,299/-
  • For Fresh painting, coverage of up to 5 doors of front & back, 5 window grill, and a balcony grill consume within 8 litre.
  • Below is the image of sample enamel paint, 500ml.
  • Color cards: are available at all paint shops free of cost. Separate color cards for emulsion paint (Royal, premium, tractor), enamel paint, and distemper. Collect respective color cards from shop. choose or match your required color. In the color card, each color has its unique color code written just below the color. Spell this color code to retailer (paint shop) for color mixing at the time of material purchase. Below color card images for your reference.
  • Color Mixing: Try to avoid manual color mixing. Manual color mixing are high in error. If you are expecting perfect outcome in color, Prefer computerised color mixing. Computerized color mixing machines available at all reputed paint shop. Color mixing cost minimum of Rs. 20–100 per color. Spell the color code at the time of materials purchase for color mixing. Below is the image of color mixing machine.
  • Miscellaneous: Here are the few other miscellaneous items require for painting. For repainting, most of the miscellaneous items carried by painters itself. It may applicable to purchase for fresh painting.
  1. 8-inch roller for wall & ceiling paint - 1 qty for repainting. 3 Qty for fresh painting. Cost around Rs. 220/- per roller

  3. Painter stool - 1 stool for repairing and 2 stool for fresh painting. A painter stool cost Rs. 650/-. usually, stools are brought by painters itself. Absolutely you no need to buy.
  4. Tape: To use at cutting and corners of wall & Ceiling (avoid paint lapping). Rs. 15 per roll. One for repainting and 5 for fresh painting.
  5. Tarpaulin: To cover furniture while painting. 6X7 feet. cost Rs. 180/- Usually painters carry this.

2. Material consumption (Size of the property): Material consumption based on few factors, they are

  • Size of property
  • Number coats
  • Thickness of coat.

It's very important to determine the required quantity of your painting job in advance. This helps to avoid wastage, save cost and plan your budget. Here are the few steps to determine material quantity, avoid wastage, and save cost.

  1. Buy sample quantity of 900 ml from local market and test the coverage area This kind of testing is most applicable for fresh painting and big projects
  2. Supply the material part by part on day to day basis.
  3. Based on my experience, below is the vague material based on property size

3. Labor: Labours are very important source for quality outcomes.

Trust me, skilled labor can able to deliver quality outcome even with optimum or poor quality of material. Unskilled labor can destroy even if we provide elite quality of material.

It's very very important to choose right and skilled labor for quality outcomes. To check the right labor.

  1. Visit their past work.
  2. Get referral from your close associates who witness they work. Like relatives, friends, colleagues, and neighbors
  3. Look at the work photos, reference from internet, and cross verify trustworthily.
  4. Check the intellectuals of laborers, ask some of your know questions to test their work intellectually. Such as work procedure and market pricing of materials.
  • Number of labors for your painting job:
  1. For 1500 Sq.ft flat - Repainting: 2 Labor is sufficient. 1 is skilled and another one helper. Job will complete in 2 days
  2. For 1500 Sq.ft flat - Fresh painting - 4 Labors require - 2 Skilled and 2 helpers. Job will complete in 6 Days.

Unlike foreign countries, labors are not available on hourly basis.

In India, labors are available on day basis from 9am to 5pm. Our labor cost is most affordable.

  • Labor cost:

Skilled labor charge Rs 1,000/- per day and helper charge Rs. 500 per day. Skilled labor is slightly variable. It's worth paying slightly more to acquire skilled labor.
