What is the procedure for an NRI to get General Power of Attorney from abroad?

The procedure is very simple. Let me give a real example in step by step explanation.

Step 1: Mr.Arun lives in Singapore and he wants to sell land in Bangalore. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, he could not able to travel to Bangalore to sell a property. We suggested to Mr. Arun that to give General Power of Attorney (GPA) to any of his blood relatives in India. so he chose to give power to his brother who lives in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu.

Step 2: Mr. Arun prepared the GPA draft in word file

Step 3: Mr. Arun Printed the GPA draft on A4 size bond paper.

Step 4: Mr. Arun got an appointment from Indian consulate office in Singapore.

Step 5: Mr. Arun carried printed GPA, passport, and local address proof to Indian consulate office, Singapore. Signed the GPA in front of Consulate officer and got the GPA attested from Indian consulate officer in Singapore.

Step 6: Mr. Arun Sent the attested GPA to his brother Mr. Cyril in India (GPA Power holder).

Step 7: Mr. Cyril received the package on 7th day of dispatch from Singapore. Mr. Cyril retained the GPA with international courier package and shipment receipt.

The shipment package and courier receipt are one of the supporting documents to get the GPA adjudicated in India. (Hence please retain till you get your GPA adjudicated from District registerer office).

Step 8: Mr. Cyril carried the following documents to District Registerer office to get the GPA Adjudicated.

The documents are,

  • Orginal GPA and one set of photocopy
  • Requisition for Adjudication (Attached the format below for your reference)
  • ID Proof
  • Phone Number

Step 11: Mr. Cyril used the GPA for Sale deed registration.

The GPA procedure is same for obtaining new bank loan or clearing the existing loan.

This completes the procedure for NRI to get the General Power of Attorney from abroad.
